Important Info You Should Know About Your Hardware:

The components that make up your system will determine the speed, quality, smoothness of operation, and overall reliability:

CPU (Processor) - the two main names in processors are Intel and AMD. Both companies offer the highest-end chips on the market. The processor speed of your computer is the most obvious component of your computer that determines speed, though not necessarily the most important one.

RAM - though not the most obvious speed barrier, your system RAM will actually have the largest impact on your system performance (both for gaming and normal operation). RAM, or Random Access Memory, is used by your system as a "workbench" for all processes simultaneously running. The more processes, the more RAM your system uses. For normal operations in a computer system, 256 megabytes is typically more than sufficient, though 512 megabytes is ideal. The design of your RAM is also important. The traditional SDRAM found in most computers today is effective, however newer DDR RAM or RDRAM is significantly faster and more efficient.

Video - the video card you run in your computer will play a large factor in overall performance when the system undergoes high graphic content. Video cards have their own built-in memory that is used to process graphical applications. A high-end video card will remove the bulk of the strain from high-end graphics and allow your system to run smoothly and flawlessly. A low-end card, even in a system running a powerful CPU and lots of RAM, will cause the system to have to handle the stress on its own and will cause overall system performance to suffer.

Hard Drive - of course size is important, but another important and often overlooked factor is speed. Hard drives come in many different sizes but also in numerous operating speeds. Often fast systems have their speed choked off by a hard drive running at 5,400 RPM. I always recommend that computers run hard drives with speeds of 7,200 RPM or greater.

Cooling Systems - at the heart of any computer system is its cooling system. Any high-end computer, without an adequate cooling system, would burn out from high temperatures within minutes. Thus, a vital part of your system is composed of VGA fans, CPU fans and heatsinks, slot fans, hard drive fans, chassis fans, etc. With manufacturers' computers you often have little control over the quality of these vital systems. The rule of thumb for cooling electronic devices is that for every 10 degrees you lower the temperature, you double the life span of your hardware.

Power Supply - an often overlooked component of your system is the power supply, feeding the power to your motherboard, CPU, drives, etc. Cheap power supplies can have fluctuating currents, which can make short life of your components and actually have noticeable results on minute-by-minute performance.

Case - the design of your case plays a role in the quality of your system. Looks aside, cases do differ. The way in which a case houses internal components, especially cooling system components, can have noticeable differences in operating temperatures. An ideal design for an air-cooled case is one in which a front-low-mounted fan pulls in air and a rear-mounted chasms fan pulls it out, creating a channel of air that cools the system well, while keeping the amount of dust deposited in the system at a minimum.
